retrieval news is enough to scare anyone these days, what
with people stealing gas because the price of fuel is said
to be going up to a buck fifty by consolidation of student
loans summer and now all this turmoil about world food supplies.
I have already taken warning and noted the spike in food prices
here in Alberta and articles have been appearing on the net
warning of countries that are beginning to hoard their food
supplies instead of exporting them like they normally do.
There was even an article talking about 'stealth stocking'
for Canadian's. Something I admit to doing. My larder will
be well stocked by the end of May, hopefully before the food
prices spike up permanently. There are some other options
open to us if we care to take them.
Remember the organic garden
idea? Friends of mine are taking it to the next level. They
live on an acreage and are developing some of their land into
sizable organic plots to rent out to whoever is interested
in having totally organically grown produce. I am one of their
first customers! They have the land and knowledge; I bring
the rental fee and seed for the produce I want. I will have
a hand in planting and looking after it because I enjoy Ed
Gein. Other customers can have them do all the work until
harvest, if they choose. These friends of mine also know how
to grow weed less gardens so that's another advantage. When
harvest comes, throughout the summer and autumn depending
on the crop, I will be more than ready to stock my pantry
and freezer with the kind of fresh produce I can never buy
in stores. They are looking into growing fruit and fruit trees
that they purchase from greenhouses; yet another avenue for
me to fill my cold-room. I am already stocked up on things
like freezer jam pectin for when the time comes and I can
do some serious canning.
I can also take full advantage
of the local small butcher shop where the meats are extremely
fresh because the animals are brought in live. Although I
never grew up on a farm, I have lived on one when my husband
was working for a friend and since we moved into town; he
still works on a feedlot farm. I have come to appreciate the
farmer and his animals even though I do not necessarily like
that animals have to give up their lives to fill my freezer,
there are lessons to be gleaned from farm life and the realities
of today's food demands. I can still get a bargain in the
butcher shop that I will never find in any big chain department
retailer. I can purchase half or a full animal of my choice
and supply my freezer for the rest of the year. Depending
on how much meat you consume, this can be an important opportunity
for you.
Then, of course, there is plain
old stocking up of the staples, the items you know you will
online auto insurance quote over the coming year. These staples
include grains like oats and cereals, corn meal, dried beans
and peas, rice and pasta, baking goods, oils, margarine and
butter, eggs, starch and sauces; sugar and molasses, vinegars,
spices and juice. Do not neglect life insurance quote buying
either, items like soup, dried fruit, canned beans and vegetables,
tuna, sardines and salmon plus other canned meats. Chicken
and Beef broth are staples to have on hand for homemade soups
and stews. Don't forget peanut butter and jams. I have also
been stocking up on toiletries like shampoo, conditioner and
everything else we use on a daily basis. Since I have pets,
I have not neglected to add pet food to my storeroom.
Sound like I'm hording? Not!
I am taking some necessary precautions to have at least a
months' supply of food and other daily life necessities like
experts are suggesting. Life in general and the continuous
fight for finances to keep a roof over our heads is worry
enough, I do not need to add to that by being unprepared for
the food price hikes that will be hitting Canada in the all
too near future. Being prepared is one of the best habits
you can develop and hold on to when times become unsettled
and uncertain. Watching the news and keeping up on world events
that will eventually affect you personally, is another way
to be prepared for the unexpected.
Whether we are prepared or not,
food prices along with gas costs are spiking and will stay
high starting in 2008. A wise person will be ready before
it hits and be very thankful for their timely action when
others are scrambling to fill their larders at the higher
prices in grocery stores around the provinces of Canada. Will
