The Great Goddess

There is a force meandering about the world today, which in a host of different cultures, is best described as the belief structure which strongly suggests a scenario of what can only be described as the Return of the Goddess.

For twenty two thousand years -- give or take a millennia or so -- The Great Goddess was in charge. Life on the planet was under her bailiwick, and all the archeological evidence of those distant ages suggest it was her rule which predominated. The evidence suggests that during her reign, there existed a vision of life expressed as a living unity; the perception of a universe. Life was an organic, living, and sacred whole, wherein humanity, the Earth, and all life on Earth were all woven into a single cosmic web.

Roughly four thousand years ago, The Great Goddess became associated with “Nature”, a chaotic force to be mastered. The male God took to the role of conquering or ordering this chaotic Nature into a structured law and order. The spiritual and physical worlds were separated, and by implication, mind was separated from matter, soul from body, thinking from feeling, intellect from intuition, and reason from instinct. The Goddess, to all extents and purposes, went underground, dropped out of sight, and retreated behind a dark veil. The feminine principle, which had manifested in mythology as “the goddess” -- the values placed on spontaneity, feeling, instinct and intuition -- were thus lost as a valid expression of the sanctity and unity of life. They were not forgotten, perhaps, but they were indeed demeaned, discarded by many, and pushed out of the mainstream.

The result of this dualism, were things like pollution (which originally meant the profaning of what was sacred), environmental devastation, competition instead of cooperation, specialization instead of wholeness, and a whole host of separations from what was once unity. It was a bad scene. But it was male scene, and consequently half the population was relatively pleased. Or they thought they were, at least.

Imagine their surprise then, when the fundamental science of physics -- the pride of a male dominated, exclusive God-oriented paradigm -- discovered observers being included in the act of observation, realizations that the whole of life could not be split into specializations, and that all participants were dynamically alive and inter-connected. The essential truth of The Great Goddess was found in the quantum world, and resurrected to the macroworld.

The Goddess had taken a powder, but now was returning.

Perhaps there is a reason that for the last several thousand years the Goddess energy has been absent from the world. Perhaps there had been a temporary and planned diversion, an absence designed to provide a space for the male energy to harness, and in the process achieve some fascinating and inspiring technologies. Perhaps, it was a millennial excursion designed to accomplish a purpose, and then recombine into an even better whole: the comparative bliss of the Goddess society, supplemented with “modern conveniences”.

In any case, the strong suggestion now is that it’s time for the Sacred Marriage between the Goddess and the God; when nature, humanity, and all the rest, can be regenerated into a sacred One. There’s even the very distinct possibility that the wedding date’s been set -- see for example, A Once and Future Myth, or better yet, Heir Apparent.

What might the return of the Goddess imply? How about, for starters...

Sacred Sex!

Now that I have your attention, let's talk about spirituality.

But lest you be disappointed, we’ll also talk about sexuality.

This combination is easy enough to do, because, simply put:

The best path toward spirituality is through sexuality.

Think about it.

When was the last time you had a peak experience?

One that totally involved your emotional and physical being?

An experience when you were completely and wholly in the Now -- not thinking about tomorrow’s agenda, or where you left your socks, or why it rains in Indianapolis (or anything else, for that matter).

When was the last time you felt overwhelmingly connected, unified with another, or with the universe at large?

In other words, when was the last time you had a peak, spiritual experience in the arms of a loved one?

Alternatively,

When was the last time you had a peak experience -- an overpowering ecstasy that literally blew you away,

That did not involve sexuality?

Given the probabilities of encountering a peak experience,

Either though sexuality (or all of those other methods),

Which seems more profitable to pursue as a spiritual path?

Which is more likely to get you there in a style to which you’d like to become accustomed?

There was a time, a long time ago,

When sexuality was an act of worship,

When love making and rejoicing were the rituals of a goddess,

When uniting in love, was a sacred offering of the most profound nature.

But then, jealousy reared its ugly head, and dualism was created --

Separating, dividing, specializing, and splitting a universal unity.

It was then the practitioners of sacred love and pleasure,

Became known as the Whores of Babylon;

And when Lilith, the mother of humanity,

Was cast in the role of a monstrous, sex-crazed mother of demons.

But that lie, that ultimate deception, fell short of its goal.

The truth which would make us all free,

Survived, flourished, and became widely known.

For the issue is not about male or female dominance,

It's not about pro-choice or pro-life,

It's not about family values or political agendas.

The issue is about exploring one’s sexuality -- discovering all of the joys, glories and delights that reside in one’s sexual, spiritual experiences.

The issue is about becoming an ascending spiritual being though acts of love, pleasure and joyous sexuality.

The issue is the Return of the Goddess.

Inanna

Inanna is the Queen of Heaven and Earth and the Goddess of Love. She is also Goddess of Grain, War, Fertility, Sexual Love, and perhaps best of all, Lady of Myriad Offices. As noted in Archetypes, Inanna was known in Mythology as healer, lifegiver, and composer of songs; the keeper of emotions -- ranging from loving, jealous, grieving, joyful, timid, and exhibitionistic, to thieving, passionate, ambitious, and generous. Inanna was eternally youthful, dynamic, fierce, sensuous, the harlot-virgin, never settled nor domesticated, magnetic, yet independent. She was into fertility, order, war, love, heavens, healing, emotions, and song; always wandering, searching for her home, her power. Ultimately, she was the embodied, playful, passionately erotic, feminine; the powerful, independent, self-willed, feminine; the ambitious, regal, many-sided feminine.

If there is to be a Return of the Goddess, it will likely be Inanna -- accompanied and announced by Lilith. The rest of the Anunnaki troop will likely simply step aside. (Albeit, Ningishzidda might be in an honored place in the retinue.) And with any luck, the Sacred Orgasm will find itself in the midst of many more lovers.

The so-called myths of Inanna were created sometime between 1900 BC and 3500 BC, although they may have been created even earlier. In their original inception they were pre-patriarchal myths. At the same time, Inanna’s myths also show the incursions of the patriarchy, her gradual dispossession and loss of status. In spite of her power as goddess of most everything, Inanna becomes a wanderer; she takes a powder. Most of the powers once held by her were being slowly eroded. The fact she was pictured as a beautiful woman (i.e. attractive to males, as opposed to the earth fertility goddesses of pre-history), suggests that she was under attack early on.

Inanna, nevertheless, provides a many-faceted symbolic image, a wholeness pattern, of the feminine beyond the merely maternal. She combined earth and sky, matter and spirit, vessel and light, earthly bounty and heavenly guidance. She was Queen of Heaven, goddess of gentle rains and terrible floods, goddess of the morning and evening star, queen of the land and its fertility, bestowing kingship on chosen mortals. She was the goddess of war (more powerful than Athena and Artemis combined), and equally passionately, the goddess of sexual love. More extroverted than Aphrodite, Her receptivity was active. Eventually, she was known by many names (Ishtar, Isis, Neith, Metis, Astarte, Cybele, Brigit, etc.), although those in later times were often described as having much less power or less all-encompassing.

Of the many stories and hymns about Inanna, four are particularly noteworthy. Three of these describe her basic “coming of age”. The first deals with her acquiring her throne and bed, her queenship and womanhood, her sovereignty and sexuality. In the process she lets go of the primitive, grasping, human aspects; her unacknowledged, unexpressed fears and desires; in order to be deserving of the gifts of throne and bed. In the second myth, Inanna acquires from the god, Enki, The Me which she in turn gives to her city of Uruk and ultimately to all humankind. The Me are the attributes of civilization, a set of universal and immutable rules and limits which had to be observed by man and god alike. The Me included kingship, priesthood, truth, garments, weapons, art of love making, speech, music and song, power and treachery, deceit, travel, kindness, writing, attention, fear, dismay, judgment, decision-making, allure, and the art of women. In effect Inanna truly earned her queenship and protectorship of her city. In the third myth, Inanna takes a consort and makes him king. She also becomes a mother.

In the fourth myth, the Descent into the Underworld, the Goddess goes far beyond the mundane. In all respects she undergoes the ultimate spiritual initiation, a Descent into Hades. In the process, she lets go of all those possessions and characteristics which feed the ego, and ends up hanging on a nail as a rotting corpse in the bowels of the underworld. But then, after acknowledging her shadow side, she ascends back to Earth and thereafter acts as the complete, fully-formed goddess that was always her. Much of the symbolism of her trip From the Great Above to the Great Below continues to this day in various initiatory rites of societies and organizations dedicated to the mysteries of the beyond.

Inanna was also the favorite of Anu, the Number One Anunnaki, and thus with the approaching end of the Age of Pisces (scheduled for 2012 A.D.), she may making the ultimate comeback, the Return of the Goddess, wherein she will wreck havoc with the patriarchy -- very likely in a manner that can not be imagined. The Great Goddess can be expected to take names and kick... whatever needs to be kicked!... But in a very nice way

Mary As Goddess: Virgin, Mother, Queen

God as Mother is the earliest known concept of the divine. The Great Mother was worshiped as early as 30,000 B.C.E., dating from The Earth Mother of Willendorf (A). Later she was known as “Inanna in ancient Sumeria, Ishtar in Babylon, Anat in Canaan, Isis in Egypt and Aphrodite in Greece, and remarkably similar stories were devised to express her role in the spiritual lives of the people” (B, p.5). When monotheism was on the rise, “goddesses like Ashera, Ishtar or Anat . . . still had a great following among the Israelites, particularly among the women” (B, p.50). This is evident in this Old Testament passage:

...we shall burn incense to the Queen of Heaven, and shall pour her libations as we used to do, we, our fathers, our kings and our princes, in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. For then we had plenty of food, and we all were well and saw no evil. But since we ceased burn incense to the Queen of Heaven and to pour libations, we have wanted everything and have been consumed by sword and famine.

Jeremiah 44:15-19

Later, in The Coronation of the Virgin, Mary would come to share the title Queen of Heaven with Inanna, Isis, and other goddesses who were worshiped before her. “In the earliest recorded act of homage paid to Mary, she was honored with customary offerings to the Goddess.” Women offered the Virgin “cakes and wine at the shrine where their ancestors had worshiped the Goddess Ashtoreth.” “Epiphanius, the late fourth-century patriarch of Constantinople, ‘noted with outrage’ ” that the women “wishing to exalt the Ever-Blessed Virgin, have put her in the place of God.” (A, p.194)

Similarly, when Christianity was brought to the British Isles, “peasants saw in the story of Christ only a new version of their own ancient tales of the Mother Goddess and her Divine Child who is sacrificed and reborn,” a tale which had “held sway for 30,000 years” (C, p. 18-19). “In habits of devotion, especially those of women, there may have been no great discontinuity between the worship of the Virgin and that of the Goddess.” Many shrines, statues and festivals, originally belonging to other Goddesses “were rededicated to the Virgin” (A, p.194).

Throughout the ages, many leaders in Christianity have attempted to de-emphasize the role of Mary and (at times violently) suppress her worship, yet devotion to the Holy Mother has only increased. Apparitions and “attendance at her pilgrimage centers” are on the rise (A, p.206). Many Christians envision her as Co-Redemtrix. She has a dedicated following of millions, within and outside of the Catholic Church, around the world. Mary is a real, vital, dynamic force in the personal lives of everyday people.

Indigo Children

The phenomenon of the so-called, Indigo Children is an amazing tale. Parents, teachers and child care facilitators from all over describe the attributes of children currently coming of age as representing a fundamental paradigm shift over what we have traditionally thought about children, their aspirations, and their future. The great challenge for the rest of us is to encourage this extraordinary development as if it were the hope of the future -- which it likely is, inasmuch as children are fundamentally the lifeblood of the community.

At the same time, we must recognize that traditional methods of dealing with children, or the horrific drugging of authority-questioning young people with Ritalin, et al, can only lead to grief for them and everyone around them. What is needed is a whole new system of nurturing what many will not even understand, and allowing without fear the emergence of a new Hierarchy of Values, arriving in the minds and feelings of the children.
Kiara Windrider <kiara@eternaldoorway.com>, who has studied the phenomenon is some depth, offers the following insights [reprinted with permission].

Variously called the Indigo and Violet children, the Children of Oz, or the Sun Eyed Children of the Marvelous Dawn, this generation of young people seems to be a new species of humanity arising on Earth today. They think differently, their motional bodies process feelings differently, their energy bodies are capable of holding stronger soul vibrations, and they have a new vision to share. They do not fit into mainstream society. Many of them appear to have special psychic and healing abilities, and [they] need special support to control and develop these gifts.

The Indigo children generally seem to range in age from the teens into the thirties, while the Violet children are younger, and carry a different mandate. Some of you reading this comprise the Indigo generation, and you are birthing a new species of kids. The Violet kids do not need to read any of this to know what’s real. They are linked mind to mind in a global psychic link-up that reflects a new fifth-dimensional morphogenetic grid on Earth. As with the hundredth monkey phenomenon [1] they are the first to step into what Sri Aurobindo envisioned as “supramental onsciousness”, which will eventually become available to the rest of us also, if we choose it.

There is a new “root race” forming on Earth! Perhaps some of you reading this are being called to provide emotional support, or to provide guidance in “training” them, or to provide safe havens for them to come together, or to support their mission by attuning with them through their global mind-link. “Among other attributes, the children relate easily to the rush of images of modern movies and communications and have no trouble understanding everything -- their information processing abilities sometimes breathtaking. They are very sensitive children in tune with the pace of technological and future change, have few self-worth issues, absolutely no fear of authority, frustrated by systems that are non-creative and ritual oriented, and they want to do things in new and better ways. They sometimes seem antisocial, and do not respond to guilt-inducing discipline techniques in school or at home. [emphasis added]

“Many of these children are gifted souls. They combine the weird, inventive and futuristic energies of Uranus with the inspirational energies of Neptune. They have all sorts of patterns by which their behaviors are indicated - probably the most obvious is what we call ADHD or ADD. However, they ought not be diagnosed as hyperactive, dyslexic and suffering from neurological disorders. The astrologer Donna Cunningham in her excellent article entitled The Ritalin Generation, describes them as children who may be ‘wired’ differently from the rest of us. She suggests that rather than having ADD and being described as hyperactive, it is more likely the previous generations (the rest of us) are to be considered hypoactive by comparison (Mountain Astrologer, April/May 2001).

“The children elected as ‘Indigo’ by authors Carroll and Tober, in their book, The Indigo Children [Hay House, 1999] may be the ones who can best adjust to the future as it’s forming now with its vast high tech and mind expanding possibilities. Only they have a nervous system wired for the immense unfolding of the next few decades, processing and acting upon astoundingly large amounts of information in very short spaces of time. This is why the new movie and TV advertisements don’t leave them mind-staggered like they do many of us. The Indigo Children can be described as creative, independent, brilliant and self-governing. Unfortunately it also means they do not fit in with today’s education systems which to many of these children, seem as unfulfilling as a discarded old piece of rag and as frustratingly slow as can be with non-responsive, entrenched authoritarianism. “Many then are seen as difficult and overactive and are drugged out with Ritalin, et al and other pharmaceutical prescriptions to keep them limited to the older standards. Give them enlightened teachers who don’t have issues with authority themselves and they will thrive. Lock their minds up and they will rebel or refuse to cooperate and drop out.

“Identifying this combination child is the first step (not all born from 1988 have every characteristic). Cooperating with them is next. They will inherit the environmental predicament made by today’s leaders as their big issue being called upon to resolve it. They need support, understanding, creativeness and patience.”

Richard Giles also described a personal experience when he was selling music, jewelry and cards from a market stall. “A younger couple had stopped to look at the relaxation music and they had a little boy in a stroller. The two of them left the pram momentary to look at something on the stall opposite and the little boy stayed in the pram right in front of me. He was a pleasant little boy with a friendly expression and a very calm demeanor, about 3 - 4 years.

“As I was smiling at him, suddenly I could hear him communicating with me in my head. It all happened so quickly I didn’t even have time to be amazed. It just flowed. We didn’t converse about anything mind-shattering. We just ‘talked’ about his parents and how they were. He ‘told’ me they didn’t know much about the abilities he had, but that was okay. He ‘said’ they were very nice people but a little bit ‘slow’ - though he had tremendous compassion and understanding for them.

“This was communicated partly in some sort of word system in my head, but also in feelings and nuances. We talked’ a little more about him and he said it was nice to communicate with me and he smiled this amazingly deep and embracing smile and physically nodded to me as if to say,Thanks. Then the parents turned back and took the back of his stroller and they moved on. He nodded to me as he went by and disappeared into the crowd with his lovely smile and that was it.

“As I type this it sends goose-bumps all over me recalling it and it brings tears to my eyes because of the extraordinary moments in that communication. It was some sort of effortless flow... The experience was like living in a huge warm, flowing world where everything was beautifully sunny and everything was just right and in its perfect place while it was all happening. The after-effects stayed with me for ages.

A psycho-spiritual counselor found herself in contact with the “first wave” of Indigos, young people now in their twenties. They were the ones who suffered the most at school and in society, and specifically with their parents, because nobody knew about them at the time, and didn’t know how to respond to them. The psychiatrists didn’t know what to do with what appeared to be hyperactive and autistic children -- and it was those children who became the “Ritalin-Generation.” But when counselors were able to recognize them, and help them understand why they are indeed so different, the children were able to begin to accept themselves. It is amazing and rewarding when one of the children open up and let their Light shine through, when they realize that there is nothing “wrong” with them! There is definitely no doubt: they are indeed very, very special Beings!

One mother describes her own experience with her 5 year-old. “We were in the kitchen. I was cleaning out a cabinet and she was playing. Out of the blue she said, ‘This is our last year, Mom.’

“Taken totally aback but definitely not wanting to startle her, I nonchalantly asked her ‘Oh yeah? Whaddya mean?’
“‘I mean, this is our last year to pretend. After this year we get to be real again. No more pretendng.’
“I kept cleaning out the cabinet and asked her if she could explain any more. She said, ‘This is our last chance to get to pretend. After this, we

get to be real again. No more chances for pretending because this is our last chance.’

“I did ask her (still nonchalantly but showing interest), ‘And this is a good thing, right?’

“‘Oh yes, Mom... a very good thing. We’ll get to be angels very soon.’

“Talk about your enlightening experiences! I, for one, totally believe she has a Direct Line, so to speak, if ya know what I mean.”

Clearly, we’re dealing with some very special children. It’s time to open up to them, as they can open up to themselves. In many respects, the optimism of the world lies in the reality of a new species arriving on the third rock from the sun. And just in time. But it is essential that we get out of their way and let the new Paradigms arrive.

The Return of the Goddess

What has this rambling tale to do with the Goddess, or the environment, or anything other than parochial gender politics? Well shortly after this meeting, on the tail feathers of a sacramental encounter, I decided to commit myself to Eve as the archaic feminine principle of the sustainable biosphere, especially the immortal principle of the germ-line or biosphere germ-web, something we are about to drastically alter by genetic technology.

I decided to look very closely at Robert Graves' works and particularly "The White Goddess", which I had neglected in my Goddess studies. What I discovered was chilling. Firstly I found that Colin Wilson's dark "Occult" was dedicated to Graves because of the uncanny circumstances surrounding the writing and publishing of "The White Goddess". Elements of the book's theme appeared through uncanny synchronicities. The first two publishers who rejected it died bizarrely and T S Elliot, who accepted it, promptly rode to the glory of a Nobel. Then I realized "The White Goddess" in 1945 had already written the mythopoetic plot of the end of the patriarchal epoch in the millennial environmental crisis. Here in "The White Goddess" was the precise nemesis: - "the longer her hour is postponed, and therefore the more exhausted by man's irreligious improvidence the natural resources of the soil and sea become, the less merciful her five-fold mask will be, and the narrower the scope of action she grants to whichever demi-god she chooses to take as her temporary consort".

I had had a powerful sacramental vision of becoming the 'millennial Christogenesis' in the 1970s after writing a paper on cosmological biogenesis. I had struggled through the latter days of the Cold War in anxious incognito. I was holding on to the living eucharist with a sense of duty to take it back into the mainstream prophetic tradition to fulfil the transmission that had begun with María Sabina and Gordon Wasson's 'holy communion' to heal nature. I had written the beginnings of the Genesis thinking of Teihlard de Chardin's vision and planned to follow the millennium to its conclusion, but the dimensions of the Goddess were missing.

How had this neurotic poet with an obsession for feminine muses captured the existential climacteric right back at the end of the Second World War, when ecocrisis hadn't even been invented? And what of the demi-god? I delved into Graves' biographies. His annotated letters were uncanny. He completed the "White Goddess" six days after my birth on the Epiphany. The same month, he declared to Eliot that two books were his "twin kettle drums" two parts of a comprehensive whole.

One was "The White Goddess", the other "King Jesus". How was the historical Christ related to this nemesis of the millennium in "The White Goddess"? Well, you find the answer in the final Crucifixion scene of "King Jesus" when Magdalen declares - "the female abides and cannot be hastened". The poet's vision was that Jesus, patriarch that he was, by declaring war on the female for the sins of Eve had pushed the hour of doom two thousand years too soon. "I the Lord will hasten it in his time" was the very passage preceding Jesus' messiah reading from Isaiah 61 at Nazareth.

Aid for homeless is street legal-But plan for free centre nixed

He doesn't look like Santa Claus, not the department store variety anyway, with no hint of a white beard or red suit or even promises of gifts to disperse.

Instead, he's an unlikely St. Nick -- a disabled lawyer from India who lives in a small apartment in the Beach and spends his good days -- when the tremors in his hands aren't too bad -- walking the streets and dispensing free legal services to the homeless and destitute.

In these days of doom and gloom, of markets crashing and companies firing, Mukhtiar "Mark" Dahiya is an inspiring rare breed -- a lawyer who doesn't want to be paid.

The 57-year-old is determined to make you forget every nasty assumption you've ever had about the legal profession. "People call them parasites," acknowledges the outspoken lawyer who hails Mahatma Gandhi as his inspiration. "In India, my professors taught us that the law profession is not a business, it's nation-building."

Instead, he believes it's become too much of a cutthroat business that leaves the most vulnerable clients behind. Lawyers used to volunteer to provide free legal aid to the poor but, in 1967, when the demand proved too much, Ontario launched the Legal Aid system to reimburse lawyers for their time. Today, though, the system is badly underfunded and fails to reach all who need assistance.

"The Charter says we are all equal," Dahiya argues as he pleads his case in a neighbourhood coffee shop. "If we are equal, why are there homeless people who can't get legal help? We should scrap the Charter if we don't uphold it, if we don't respect it."

Legal Aid once had HARP, the Homeless Access and Referral Partnership project, which it ran through five homeless shelters, but that has been discontinued. Dahiya says many of the homeless he meets in his walkabouts have small legal problems, from shoplifting charges to police harassment, and they don't know how to access help when they don't have an address or identification.

"On occasion," Dahiya wrote in his letter last May to the Law Society of Upper Canada, "they commit suicide in the streets because small problems may appear insurmountable to them because of their poverty, health and lack of legal help."

And that is why he became determined to become a volunteer lawyer.

In 1995, he left his legal practice and his wife and two daughters in India to find them a better life in Canada. He went to law school in Ottawa to achieve his Ontario degree but, before he could write his bar admissions exam, he was in a car accident that left him injured, lethargic and unable to continue.

His marriage back in India suffered and his family never did join him. His hands tremble and his doctor warns that it will only get worse. There are days when he doesn't have the energy to leave his apartment.

Dahiya found the only thing that got him back on his feet was offering legal advice to the homeless he encountered on the street. "It is therapy to me," he explains. "My health improved because of these people."

After years of helping others -- and sometimes angering police and politicians in the process -- he was inspired to finally take his bar exams. In September 2006, Dahiya became a proud member of the Law Society, with his goal to finally be able to represent his homeless clients in court. "I don't want to be paid. I'm an old man on disability. I don't need the money."

But Dahiya soon found an obstacle to his selfless plan.

Paying the Law Society's high licence and insurance fees were unmanageable for someone offering his services pro bono. He appealed to the law society and, in June, they amended their bylaws so that non-practising lawyers who provide free legal services through Pro Bono Law Ontario can have their fees waived.

Dahiya was overjoyed. He had grand plans to formalize his outreach legal services by moving to a donated storefront that he would call City Law Centre. "People don't trust you if you don't have an office," he says with a laugh. "They think I'm a police officer."

But when he went to a training seminar run by Pro Bono Law Ontario last week, he discovered the bureaucratic fine print. It seems his insurance and license fees are covered only if he's working for free through an approved charity or non-profit group -- not on his own.

"You have to get into the old system that has already failed people," he argues. "They're only making it more difficult to do what I want to do."

And so for now, his plans to play legal Santa to the homeless have been placed on ice.
